Spring like weather wreaks havoc with Ice Oval, forces meet cancellation

A nice warm weekend graced the City of Prince George with temperatures reaching as high as plus five on Saturday.

The weather was a welcomed sight for everyone except for the Prince George Ice Oval who had to cancel a regional skating meet because of the balmy conditions.

It wasn’t fun turning families away who made the trip from outside the city according to Ice Oval Society Member Lyle Dickeson.

“The timing was really unfortunate there were some kids that needed to get sometimes in order to qualify for some other meet. I think we managed to get a few of them done on Thursday night to get ahead of time and then just to had to shut it down after that, so a lot of families came into town and were not able to skate.”

The natural ice surface continues to be at the mercy of Mother Nature as the weather forecast continues to be up and down like a yo-yo.

Dickeson is of the belief this can take a toll on ice makers and competitors.

“You know, the hard part is to try and plan these events and to get people to come in from out of town and then commit to it when there is no certainty. As a racer myself I know what that is like to go and travel someplace and then you get there and they tell you, you can’t race.”

He expects the Ice Oval to be up and running by tomorrow.
