BC Cannabis Store potentially on its way to PG

Prince George could be the location of the second BC Cannabis Store. Currently, the only other location in the province for a BC Cannabis Store is in Kamloops.

Councillors will vote at Monday’s regular council meeting on a rezoning application, from the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), for a property at 6565 Southridge Avenue. The proposed rezoning would add “Retail, Cannabis” as a principal use to allow a provincial cannabis retail store. Administration supports this rezoning application as it is consistent with the policy direction of the Official Community Plan.

The LCRB is the provincial authority responsible for private cannabis retail stores per the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act, so no application to the LCRB for approval is needed. The proposed rezoning is not expected to have significant impacts on surrounding properties, according to Administration in the report on Council’s agenda.

In an application letter from the Liquor Distribution Branch, it is outlined the LDB has received support from the property owner to proceed. It also states keeping cannabis out of the hands of minors will be a top priority for the LDB.

More information on the application can be found in Council’s agenda for the January 21st meeting under F.8.
