WHL: (PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS)

Everett Silvertips  4  Prince George Cougars  1  (Tuesday)

The Silvertips erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring late in the second period followed by three unanswered goals in the third, the last into an empty net.

Ethan Browne, a former Silvertip, scored the only goal for the Cats and it came on a 5-on-3 power play.

Taylor Gauthier made 33 saves as Everett outshot P.G. 37-17.

The Cougars suffered their P.G. club-record 17th consecutive loss (0-13-3-1) before 2,139 fans at CN Centre.

They are 0-5-0-1 since general manager Mark Lamb replaced Richard Matvichuk as head coach.

The (41-14-1-2) Silvertips lead the Western Conference by four points over the (39-14-2-1) Vancouver Giants and they top the U.S. Division by seven points over the (36-16-3-3) Portland Winterhawks.

The 16-35-4-3 Cougars are last in the Western Conference, 10 points behind the (22-28-4-1) Kamloops Blazers and 13 back of the (23-28-5-1) Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds hold down the final wild-card playoff spot.

Prince George is also 14 points behind the (24-29-4-1) Kelowna Rockets.

The Rockets are currently in a playoff spot by sitting third in the B.C. Division.

The Cougars have just 10 games left: three against Kamloops, two each against Spokane, Portland and Victoria and one against Everett.

Everett broke open a 0-0 game by scoring three times in the second period, two of them on the power play before a Family Day crowd of 2,794 in Prince George.

BCHL: (PG SPRUCE KINGS)

The Prince George Spruce Kings close out their regular season with back-to-back home games against the Chilliwack Chiefs Friday and Saturday.

The (42-13-1) Chiefs will finish first in the Mainland Division.

The 37-13-1-5 Spruce Kings are second in the overall BCHL standings with a team record 37 wins.

Prince George is five points behind Chilliwack.

Both teams have won 10 of their last 11 games.

The Spruce Kings will likely meet the (27-23-3-3) Coquitlam Express in the first round of the playoffs.

Coquitlam is third in the Mainland Division, five points ahead of the (26-26-2-1) Langley Rivermen with the R1vermen having just three games left.

 

BCMML: (CARIBOO COUGARS)

The Cariboo Cougars host the seventh place (15-14-3-2) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday afternoon at 4:00 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The 21-8-5 Major Midget Cougars are in 4th place in the 11-team league with six regular season games left.

Cariboo is two points behind the (23-10-1-2) Okanagan Rockets, and five back of both the (23-7-4-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs (25-7-1-1) and the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

 

MANNING:

Defenceman Brandon Manning of Prince George has cleared waivers, and will report to the Edmonton Oilers AHL farm team, the Bakersfield Condors.

The 28-year-old Manning played 12 games with the Oilers, scoring one goal while averaging 13:25 minutes of ice time per game.

Manning, a former Cariboo Cougar and Spruce King, has two goals and two assists in 39 games this season with the Blackhawks and Oilers.

The Vancouver Canucks host Arizona Thursday, the N.Y. Islanders Saturday and Anaheim Monday.

The (26-27-7) Canucks are one point behind the (27-27-6) Minnesota Wild for the final wild-card playoff spot.

Vancouver is tied for ninth in the Western Conference with Colorado, Arizona and Chicago, just two points ahead of Anaheim.

There are four Wednesday games in the NHL: Winnipeg at Colorado, N.Y. Islanders at Calgary, Boston at Vegas and Chicago at Detroit.

 

CURLING: (SCOTT TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS)

UPDATE at 2:OO

Ontario beat B.C. today 8-6 meaning B.C. faces Manitoba Thursday morning in a tie-break to see which team advances to the Championship Pool.

Earlier:

B.C. is 4-2 and in a four-way tie with Ontario, Manitoba and Northern Ontario for second place in Pool A at the
National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Alberta leads at 6-0.

B.C. plays Ontario (Rachel Homan) today (10:30 a.m. PT).

The top four teams in the Pool A advance to the Championship Pool.

On Tuesday, B.C. lost 8-7 to Northern Ontario in an extra end and then came back to beat winless Quebec 7-6.

B.C. is represented by skip Sarah Wark of Abbotsford and her team that has two sisters (third Kristen Pilote and lead Jen Rusnell) and a coach (Rick Fewster) from Prince George.

(Fewster is Pilote’s and Rusnell’s dad)

The Wark team qualified after winning provincials in Quesnel.

 

PARA NORDIC SKIING:

After a training day Tuesday, racing resumes today  (10:00 a.m.) at the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships in Prince George at the Otway Nordic Centre.

Canada has four medals, two each from Colin Cameron of Sudbury, Ontario and Mark Arendz of P.E. I.

Cameron won gold Monday and a silver Saturday while Arendz took silver Sunday and a bronze Saturday.

118 men and women athletes from 19 countries are competing in four cross-country skiing and four biathlon events.

Canada is represented by 11 athletes and three guides, including three athletes from B.C.

The participants are grouped into three classes: sitting, standing, and visually impaired.

 

CANADA WINTER GAMES:

Team B.C. has five gold, one silver and four bronze for a total of 10 medals entering competition today (Wednesday) at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

B.C. is third behind Quebec (29 including 8 gold) and Alberta (17, including 6 gold)

Nine Prince George athletes are competing (four in speed skating, two in judo and one each in alpine skiing, snowboard and wheelchair basketball).

Joel Ewert of P.G. is part of the B.C. wheelchair basketball team that finished third in Pool B with a 2-2 record and will play in the consolation round against Saskatchewan today.

The Dinos win the best of three quarterfinal series 2-0, extending their win streak to 17 games.

The season is over for the UNBC women’s basketball team.

MLB:

Infielder Manny Machado has agreed to the biggest free-agent contract in American sports history — a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres.

Machado, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner at third base, made $16 million last season between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles.

His contract includes a limited no-trade clause.
