The Cariboo Cougars are the Mac’s AAA Midget Tournament Champions for the first time. The Cougars won the final in Calgary 2-1 over the Regina Pat Canadians in double overtime. The tournament’s top goalie Griffen Outhouse stopped 40 shots for the Prince George based team. Chase Dubois scored the winner 83 seconds in the second OT period. Wesley Shipton notched the other goal for the Cats, who went 3-1 in the round robin and 3-0 in the playoffs. Conor MacEachern of Cariboo was named the tournament’s Top Defenceman. Outhouse and MacEachern were named First Team All-Stars.

The Cariboo Cougars have advanced to the New Year’s day final (3pm pacific time) against the Regina Pat Canadians at the Mac’s Midget Triple A Hockey Tournament in Calgary. The Cougars edged the Calgary Buffaloes 5-4 in overtime in the semis after posting a 5-1 victory over the German U17 Nationals in the quarters. Justin Almeida scored the OT winner against the Buffaloes, his second goal of the game. (Cariboo advanced to the playoffs after going 3-1 in the round robin)

–The P.G. based Northern Cougars female midget hockey team ended up with a record of 1-2-1 at the Mac’s in Calgary. The Northern Cougars tied Swift Current 1-1 in its final game. (They beat Peace Country 2-1 after losing to St Albert 1-0 and 4-3 to the Westman Wildcats)

–The Prince George Cougars are 2-1 on a five game road trip which continues Friday in Vancouver and wraps up Saturday in Kelowna. The 19-19 Cougars are coming off a 5-3 win over the WHL leading Rockets as Ty Edmonds stopped 45 of 48 shots. The next games at CN Centre for the Cats go Tuesday and Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings acquired 20 year old forward Michael Buonincontri and 18 year old defenseman Greydon Robinson from the West Kelowna Warriors in exchange for 20 year old defenseman Tyler Kunz. The Spruce
Kings also obtained 18 year old defenseman Cole McCaskill from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in return for future considerations. Buonincontri is a re-acquisition for the Spruce Kings after he started the season with the team. He has 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 32 games. Robinson has tallied 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points in 24 games with West Kelowna. McCaskill has four assists in 18 games.

–The P.G. Spruce Kings return to action on Saturday when they host the Nanaimo Clippers in their first game in 2015.

–The Alyssa Connell Prince George rink finished with a 1-6 record at the Provincial Junior Women’s Curling Championship in Parksville. Connell lost her final two round robin games on Thursday: 8-5 to Shawna Jensen of Powell River and 5-2 to Corryn Brown of Kamloops.

–Alyssa Connell of Prince George (and her rink of Third Bailey Eberherr, Second Jordan Henson and Lead Erin Ross) is 1-4 at the eight-team Provincial Junior Women’s Curling Championship in Parksville. Connell lost a pair of games Wednesday: 9-8 to Cierra Fisher of Vernon and 7-6 in an extra end to Maria Coulombe of Victoria.
(The P.G. foursome earlier lost 11-6 to Briana Egan of Coquitlam and 7-6 to Sarah Daniels of Delta to go along with a 9-5 victory over Kirsten Zucchet of Chilliwack)

–The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club hosts the first 2015 Teck BC Cup at Otway Nordic Centre Saturday and Sunday. 200 skiers from around the province are expected to participate. The schedule is listed below.

9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2015 – Home Hardware Classic Technique Sprints Qualification Round (to determine seeding positions for the afternoon Heats)

12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Saturday, January 3, 2015 – Home Hardware Classic Technique Sprint Heats

10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 4, 2015—RHB Schmitz de Grace Free Technique, Interval Start

This event (sanctioned by Cross Country Canada) will use the same courses and facilities that will be used for the 2015 Canada Winter Games cross country ski races being held during the last week of February.
