BCHL: (Mainland Division semi-final)

The Prince George Spruce Kings host the Coquitlam Express tonight in game five of their BCHL Mainland Division semi-final.

The Spruce Kings, who have won their last 10 at the RMCA, enjoy a 3-1 series lead.

Prince George has won 15 of its last 17 games overall.

There were less than 1,000 tickets (at $10 each) left for the game as of 2 PM Wednesday.

In the other Mainland Division semi-final series, the Langley Rivermen visit the first place Chilliwack Chiefs tonight with Langley enjoying a 3-1 lead.

WHL: 

The Prince George Cougars host the Portland Winterhawks Friday and Saturday on the second last weekend of the WHL regular season.

The Cougars will conclude with a home and home against the Blazers; March 15th in Kamloops and the 16th at CN Centre.

The (38-19-3-3) Winterhawks are second in the U.S. Division, five points ahead of Spokane.

The 17-39-5-3 Cougars have lost five straight and 22 of their last 23.

Prince George has dropped its last 12 home games.

The Cats are 1-9-1-1 since general manager Mark Lamb took over as interim head coach.

The Cougars are 19th out of 22 teams in the WHL, three points ahead of Regina.

BC MAJOR MIDGET LEAGUE: 

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season on the road this weekend.

The Major Midget Cougars visit the 6th place Vancouver North West Hawks Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday morning at 10:45 in North Vancouver.

The 25-8-5  Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team league with two regular season games left, just one point back of both the (25-7-4-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs and the (27-9-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Fraser Valley will host 10th place North Island while the NE Chiefs entertain the 5th place Thompson Blazers on Saturday and Sunday.

BC MINOR MIDGET LEAGUE:

The Cariboo Minor Midget Cougars will visit the second place Fraser Valley Minor Midget Thunderbirds in the best of three semi-final.

Games are scheduled for Friday night at 8:30, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and if needed, Sunday afternoon at 12:45.

The Cariboo 15-year-olds beat the Greater Vancouver Canadians 5-4 and 5-4 to win the best of three quarter-final series 2-0.


NHL:

Alex Edler scored at 3:11 of overtime as the Canucks erased a 2-0 deficit after two periods.

Vancouver snapped a 4-game losing skid.

The 28-30-9 Canucks visit Edmonton tonight and host Vegas on Saturday.

The Canucks and Oilers are tied for 11th in the Western Conference, seven points behind Minnesota for the final wild-card playoff spot.

Vancouver has just 15 games left (10 home and 5 away).

Brett Connolly of Prince George scored his career-high 17th goal of the season for the Capitals.

The Montreal Canadiens visit the San Jose Sharks tonight.

Carey Price from Anahim Lake is tied with Jacques Plante for most wins in Habs history with 314.

The 31-year-old Price reached that total in 611 appearances while Plante achieved that mark in 556 games with the team.

There are 11 Thursday NHL games in total with Winnipeg and Toronto the only Canadian teams idle.

 

CURLING:

Jim Cotter of B.C. has advanced to the Championship Pool at the Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon.

Alberta topped Pool B at 7-0 followed by Canada at 6-1.

B.C. and Ontario tied for third at 4-3 after Ontario beat the Cotter foursome 10-9 by scoring two in the 10th.

In Pool A, Northern Ontario finished 7-0 with Wildcard next at 6-1.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan tied for third at 4-3.

B.C. will play Northern Ontario today (Thursday) at noon in Draw 15 and Wildcard tonight at 5:00 in the Championship Pool.

Cotter also faces Manitoba Friday at noon and Saskatchewan Friday night at 5.

The top four teams in the Championship Pool advance to the Page playoffs.


HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS:

The provincial boys high school basketball championships are on the court this week in Langley.

The Duchess Park 3A boys beat Caledonia 72-49 in their opener to advance to the quarter-finals tonight (Thursday) at 8:15 against G.W. Graham.

The D.P. Todd 2A boys outscored Pacific Academy 82-68 in its first game to move on to the quarters this evening at 8:15 against George Elliot.

Cedars Christian of Prince George, Northside Christian of Vanderhoof and McBride are all competing at the 1A boys.

Cedars Christian got by Pemberton 62-48 to advance to the quarter-finals tonight at 8:15 against Kelowna Christian.

Northside Christian lost 80-75 to King David and McBride lost to Highroad Academy 88-55.

The 16-team B.C. girls 1A basketball championship is taking place in Chilliwack.

Bulkley Valley Christian of Smithers won its opener 60-54 over Khalsa Secondary.

Nechako Valley of Vanderhoof beat Pemberton Secondary 71-55.

In the quarter-finals today, Bulkley Valley Christian meets Kelowna Christian (10:15 AM) and Nechako Valley plays St. Andrew’s Regional (3:30 PM).

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors visit the (30-37) New Orleans Pelicans Friday and the (30-34) Miami Heat Sunday.

The (46-19) Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games behind the (48-16) Milwaukee Bucks.
