The mercury is on the rise.
With the weather increasing in temperature, the City of Prince George has its Utilities Division preparing for the anticipated ponding and localized flooding that will occur during “melting season.”
With more than 5,500 storm drains within the city limits, approximately 40 crewmembers are ready to ensure they all remain as clog-free as possible, as well as to prevent potential traffic issues associated with localized flooding.
This year, residents and visitors to Prince George who wish to report a large puddle to the City have a new, easy-to-remember way of doing so: simply dial 3-1-1 when within City limits.
Wil Wedel, the City’s Manager of Utilities, says once reports are put into the system, it can actually map the information — allowing crews to complete work in a more coordinated manner rather than just the on-call basis.
In addition to dialing 3-1-1, citizens have multiple ways of contacting the City:

- Submit a service request on the City website or the CityofPG app
Prince George residents can also do their part in ensuring storm drains in their area are clear of snow and ice, as well as debris, which will allow efficient drainage as the snow and ice begin to melt. Residents are also reminded not to use sprinklers to melt snow and ice, and that those who do may be subject to a fine per City bylaws.
“Sandbagging, tarping, ditching, and clearing clogged drains and culverts are all effective measures for reducing the risk of flooding,” says Wedel. “Residents with houses at risk for basement flooding are advised to have sump pumps available and to be prepared to work with neighbours to divert water to the closest storm drains.”
