MAJOR MIDGET HOCKEY:

Calgary Buffaloes  3  Cariboo Cougars  2  (OT Saturday)

The Buffaloes scored 46 seconds into overtime.

Calgary won the best-of-three Major Midget Pacific Regional championship series 2-0.

The Buffaloes advance to the Telus Cup midget Canadian championship in Thunder Bay, Ontario April 22-28.

The Buffaloes took the opener and erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring late in the second period followed by three unanswered goals in the third.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will host the Vernon Vipers in the first two games of the Fred Page Cup championship series on Friday and Saturday.

Tickets go on sale this (Monday) morning at 10:00.

The Vipers advanced on Friday after they beat the defending champion Wenatchee Wild 3-1 to capture the Interior Final four games to one.

The Coastal Conference champion Spruce Kings have won nine straight and are 12-1 in the playoffs, outscoring the opposition 51-21.

The Spruce Kings have won 24 of their last 26 overall games and are riding a 15-game home winning streak that dates back to mid-December.

WHL: (3 playoff games Sunday)

The Vancouver Giants visit the Victoria Royals Tuesday with the Giants ahead 2-0 in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal. Vancouver won on Saturday 2-1 in overtime.

NHL: 

The Stanley Cup playoffs will open with five games on Wednesday to start the Conference Quarterfinals.

Winnipeg will host St. Louis, Dallas is at Nashville and Vegas visits San Jose in the West.

Pittsburgh plays at NY Islanders and Tampa entertains Columbus in the West.

The other three first-round series will begin Thursday: Colorado at Calgary, Toronto at Boston and
Carolina at Washington.

The Vancouver Canucks finished their season with a 35-36-10 record, good for 12th in the Western Conference and 23rd in the overall standings.

Joel Quenneville, who guided the Chicago Blackhawks to 3 Stanley Cup, is the new coach of the Florida Panthers.

He has been re-united with GM Dale Tallon.

Quenneville replaces Bob Boughner, who was fired after two seasons.

The Buffalo Sabres fired head coach Phil Housley after his second year on the job.

The 33-39-10 Sabres finished 27th in the overall NHL standings.

 

KELLY CUP:

Devin Burkitt skipped his team to victory in the 92nd Kelly Cup men’s bonspiel at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

Burkitt beat Michael Dahms 7-3 in the final.

41 teams competed.


WORLD Curling:

Niklas Edin of Sweden won his fourth world men’s curling championship.
Edin snapped a 2-2 tie with a steal of two in the eighth and three in the ninth to beat Kevin Koe of Canada 7-2 in the gold medal game in Lethbridge.
Canada beat Scotland 6-5 in the quarterfinals and Switzerland 6-5 in the semifinals to advance.

SWIMMING:

Former Prince George Barracudas swimmer Josiah Binnema won gold in the 100-metre fly at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto.

Haley Black of P.G. earned silver in the 50-metre fly and also finished 4th in the 100 fly.

Ex-Prince George Barracuda Danica Ludlow took bronze in the 400 free.

Binnema has been named to the FINA World Championship Team heading to Gwangju, Korea July 21-28.

Black and Ludlow will be heading to Lima, Peru for the 2019 Pan American Games August 4-10.

Binnema and Black are currently training at the High-Performance Centre in Vancouver.

Ludlow is attending the University of Calgary.

 

GOLF:

Corey Conners became the 15th Canadian to win on the PGA Tour.

Conners, from Listowel, Ont., won the Valero Texas Open on Sunday earning him the final available slot in the Masters which will begin on Thursday.

He finished 20-under par to score a two-shot victory over Charley Hoffman.

 


MLB:

Cleveland Indians  3  Toronto Blue Jays  1

The Indians swept the four-game series.

The 3-8 Blue Jays play a two-game series in Boston on Tuesday (11:00 AM PT) and Thursday (4:00 PM PT).

NCAA BASKETBALL:

The NCAA men’s basketball game will tip off tonight (6:20 PM PT) in Minneapolis.

The #1 Virginia Cavaliers battle the #3 Texas Tech Raiders.

NBA:  

Toronto Raptors  117  Miami Heat  109  (OT)

The (57-24) Raptors conclude their regular season at Minnesota against the Timberwolves on Tuesday.

The Raptors will finish second in the NBA Eastern Conference (behind the Milwaukee Bucks) and will face the 7th seeded team in the opening round of the playoffs.

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

Soccer player Gordon Hall and basketball standout Vasiliki Louka have been named the UNBC Timberwolves top Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
