It’s not that easy being green

School District 57 high school students have hit a roadblock in the fight to be more environmentally friendly.

For the past three months, the SD57 Student Advisory Committee has been working on implementing a district-wide recycling program.

SD57 Trustee Ron Polillo said this main problem is the lack of recycling infrastructure in the province.

“It’s no secret there is not a huge market of plastics right now, and if you recycle it, you need to put it somewhere.”

He said right now the recycling companies are not willing to accept any more.

Adding some of the schools do have programs, but the hope was to coordinate something on a larger scale.

One of the options the committee is considering is working out a deal with a recycling company for a pilot program in one school and letting it go from there.

“The next step now is for those students to explore some other options like finding champions in the school to start programs with parents, students, and staff to handle their own recycling.”
