Prince George hosts ceremony for National Day of Mourning

To honour the National Day of Mourning a ceremony will take place in Prince George today.

The day commemorates workers killed on the job.

The ceremony will be at the Worker’s Memorial Statue, at the corner of Patricia Blvd. and Queensway St. at noon.

“On this National Day of Mourning, people around B.C. and across the country will observe a moment of silence in honour of those who were killed or injured in the workplace. We share this moment with the family and friends of fallen workers, who feel this loss every single day,” said Premier John Horgan.

In British Columbia, in 2018 131 workers lost their lives with the highest job loss being in construction with 30 deaths.

Last year almost 3,000 claims were reported each week, and approximately 106 long-term disability claims were accepted each week.

“Our government remains committed to the fair treatment of workers and employers to prevent workplace tragedies so that everyone makes it home at the end of the day.”
