DOYLE CUP JUNIOR HOCKEY: 

Prince George Spruce Kings  3  Brooks Bandits  1

The best-of-seven Doyle Cup is tied 2-2 with game five tonight and game six Saturday night in Prince George.

The Spruce Kings increased their overall home winning streak to 18 games (dating back to mid- December) before 1,908 fans at the RMCA.

Down 1-0 after one period, the Spruce Kings scored a pair of goals in the second, including the winner from Patrick Cozzi at the 18:23 mark.

Nolan Welsh notched the other two P.G. goals, one early in the second on the power-play and one in the final minute into an empty net.

Logan Neaton made 18 saves, including a huge pad stop in the final minute, as Prince George outshot Brooks 28-19.

The Spruce Kings and Bandits have a guaranteed berth in the national junior A hockey championship May 11-19 in Brooks.

The Spruce Kings play Sunday, May 12 at 1:00 p.m. PT, Monday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. PT, Wednesday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. PT and Thursday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. PT vs. Brooks in the round robin.

The semi-finals are Saturday, May 18th at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. PT and the Gold Medal game is on Sunday, May 19th at 2:00 p.m. PT.

The Prince George Cougars selected 3rd and 4th at the WHL Bantam Draft in Red Deer this morning.

They picked up defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk from the OHA Edmonton Program and then took his teammate, forward Koehn Ziemmer with their next selection.

The Cougars selected 10 players in the draft, six forwards, three defencemen and a goalie. Those picks are right here.

The Winnipeg Ice had the first two picks and selected highly-skilled forward Matt Savoie and power-forward Conor Geekie.

Prince George minor hockey player Nico Myatovic was selected in the 6th round of the WHL Bantam Draft, 119th overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Max Sanford of Williams Lake went one pick earlier, 118th overall to the Kelowna Rockets.

Both Myatovic and Sanford played for the PG based North Central Bobcats that won the provincial bantam hockey championship this year in Prince George.

During the Bantam Draft, the Cougars dealt former top prospect and 17-year-old defenceman Tyson Phare to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for 16-year-old forward Fischer O’Brien.

O’Brien is the younger brother of former Cougar and Spruce King Brogan O’Brien.

Former PG Cougar Justin Almeida of the Moose Jaw Warriors won the WHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year award.

Almeida notched 111 points in 64 games, including a league-high 78 assists.

Joachim Blichfeld of the Portland Winterhawks (Western Conference) captured the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Player of the Year.

Blichfeld was the league’s Top Scorer with 114 points, including a league-high 53 goals.

The WHL Championship Series for the Ed Chynoweth Cup will start in Prince Albert with the Raiders hosting the Vancouver Giants Friday and Saturday.

The Final, using a 2-3-2 format, will shift to Langley for game three on Tuesday.

(Hurricanes lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final 3-0 and they will go for a sweep Friday (4:00 PT) in Carolina)

There are a pair of Stanley Cup playoff games tonight: Boston at Columbus (4:30) followed by San Jose at Colorado (7:00).

Both the Blue Jackets and Sharks lead their second-round series 2-1.

The Toronto Raptors visit the Philadelphia 76’ers in the only NBA playoff game tonight

Their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final is even 1-1.

The Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics shift to Boston for game three Friday night at 5:00 with that series tied 1-1.

The Golden State Warriors, up 2-0, tip off against the Rockets Saturday night at 5:30 in Houston.

LA Angels  6  Toronto Blue Jays  3  

The same teams meet again tonight (7:00) in Anaheim as the Angels go for a three-game sweep.

The 14-16 Blue Jays also visit the Texas Rangers Friday to Sunday.

Toronto is third in the A.L. East, 3 games behind the NY Yankees and 5 back of the Tampa Bay Rays.
