District Chair speaks on emotional response to Kelly Road name change

After a day full of controversy following the proposed Kelly Road Secondary School name change, Tim Bennett, School District 57 (SD57) Chair, addressed public concern.

Bennett clarified that the motion passed was to “engage in the process” of changing the school’s name.

He said that moving forward, SD57 intends to engage in “purposeful dialogue” with community members to assess the new name.

While the emotional connection between the school and parents, alumni, and students was acknowledged, Bennett asserted offensive language and comments would not be tolerated in schools or on SD57 online platforms.

An Inclusive Education Support Team has been composed to aid Kelly Road students who may require additional support during this time.

Bennett concluded that those who wish to formally voice their concerns should email: kellyroadfeedback@sd57.bc.ca
