Flash-mob celebrates “Victims of Crime Awareness Week”

National Victims of Crime Awareness Week in Prince George kicked off with a surprise this morning.

170 Prince George students participated in a flash mob in front of the RCMP detachment dancing along to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”

RCMP Victim Services Coordinator Krista Levar says they’ve been planning this since January

“There were seven schools involved. The kids have been training and we’ve been dropping into their sessions and learning the dance with them. It’s just been a great opportunity to connect with youth; from here we are going and having a youth conference with all the kids that participated.”

The theme to the week is Shake it Off: Survivor to Thriver.

“It’s one thing to be a victim; it’s a whole other thing to overcome that.” Levar said “So it’s about moving past your victimization and knowing that sometimes people are not going to respond to you the way you want, sometimes you are going to get bullied and things will happen in your life that are not always good.”

Other free public events taking place for Victims of Crime Awareness Week include:

• Tea and Talk at Book and Company April 21st 2-4pm
• Self-Care in Action at The Native Friendship Centre April 22nd 9:30am – 2:30pm
• 6th Annual NVCAW Gala at Coast Inn of the North April 22nd 6-9pm

A video of the flash mob can be viewed on the My PG Now Facebook page.
