34,773 people attended the world women’s curling championship in Prince George from March 19th to 27th.
That’s according to a report that will be delivered to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George Board of Directors tomorrow during their regular meeting.
The same report said there was a total broadcast audience of over 4.7 million people.
The average minute audience was 349,400, with the highest rated draw being Saturday’s semifinal matchup between Canada and Korea. That draw had an average minute audience of 511,400.
“Under the circumstances, which were, at best, tenuous in the weeks leading up to it, we had no idea what to expect,” said Curling Canada Spokesperson Al Cameron.
“I think I can speak on behalf of both us and the World Curling Federation that we were very pleased with the turnout for the BKT Tires and OK Tire World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George.”
Cameron says during a non-pandemic year, the event, if it happens in Canada, can get anywhere between 60,000 to 80,000.
“We were very pleased with the support of Prince George,” Cameron said.
“Prince George did a remarkable job, the volunteers were absolutely terrific. From Curling Canada’s perspective, the group of people from the host committee on down to every volunteer was terrific to work with.”
“The players all spoke highly of the experience, for many of them it was the first world championship in a couple of years where they’ve had fans in attendance.”
Cameron added to ‘never say never’ when it comes to international curling to make it’s return to Prince George.
“It all comes down to a fair and equitable bidding process,” Cameron said.
“Prince George has proven it can host world class events, and if the desire is there from Prince George, from the province of British Columbia, it certainly is on the table.”
