Local teacher punished for putting student with known nut allergy at risk

A Prince George elementary school teacher has been disciplined in relation to a December 2021 mishap.

According to a provincial consent resolution, the female teacher brought an advent calendar to her school and failed to check if the chocolates contained nuts.

The report stated a letter of discipline was issued to the teacher by School District 57 and was suspended for two days without pay, which was served later that month.

The teacher entered into the agreement voluntarily on January 24th, 2024 noting her actions had put a student’s health and safety at risk.

In addition, the student was a member of her second-grade class and had a peanut allergy, which included an EpiPen that was on-site at the school’s medical room.

The consent resolution stated three students could take wrapped chocolates from the advent calendar.

Furthermore, the teacher instructed the student with the nut allergy to not ingest the chocolate until it was checked to see if it contained nuts, which it did.

The student left the school with her grandmother and headed home before the teacher informed the pupil.
