New project at UHNBC bringing much needed bed space

A $8 million project at the University Hospital of Northern BC(UHNBC) is bringing improvements to its second floor.

IDL was awarded the project to add inpatient rooms, a rehab area, lounge, and dining for a new 24-bed unit.

“The new unit will have 24 inpatient beds and that is an important aspect of the project that it will add some much needed bed capacity at UHNBC,” says Eryn Collins, Communications Coordinator. “We have seen periods of overcapacity at the hospital in recent years and that should help alleviate that.”

“The unit will be focusing on a rehabilitative care approach, supporting patients to stay strong and mobile, and able to perform activities of daily living while they receiving care in hospital,” Added Collins.

Funding for the project was provided by the Ministry of Health ($4.8 million) and the Fraser Fort George Regional Hospital District ($3.2 million).

The unit is expected to be opened early 2019.
