A unique partnership is seeing the university get rid of its food while helping a local charity.
A student led project from the University of Northern BC is seeing left over food saved and taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Executive Chef Rodney Mansbridge says the students recover food that is still good to eat.
“And these are foods that are still food safe, but by commercial food standards we can only use them a couple of times and after that we have to discard them,” says Mansbridge, “and because of the BC Good Samaritan Act, they are able to take those foods and give them to a charity.”
Mansbridge says they store the food in a portable fridge that a volunteer picks up every week.
He says on average they give away about 100 to 200 pounds of food a week.
