Above average temperatures were the norm for the month of May.
Environment Canada’s Andre Besson says the average daily highs sat at around 25.7 degrees, while it was also a lot drier than usual, as precipitation levels were down at around 39.3 millimeters down from around 49.
That said, Besson explained how one particular item was far more significant:
“If there was one thing that was remarkable for the month of May, it’s the fact that it was a very busy month in terms of lightning strikes. We’ve had near 500% of normal for lightning strikes for the month of May”
Besson says this year is also a weak El Nino year, which could be contributing to a lack of persistent rainfall.
He also says we can expect these above average temperatures to continue well into the Summer.
