New family of Syrian refugees land in Prince George

Another family of Syrian refugees landed in Prince George last night (Thursday), welcomed to their new home by a large crowd at YXS.

While the Westwood Church sponsored the first two, this family was brought over by the Our Saviours Lutheran Church.

“There’s a lot of people from the community here that are really excited to welcome them, make them feel like this is their new home,” Church committee member Kirk Gable said.

Since the family of six (two parents, four children) speaks no english, a translator was on hand.

Amed Muhammad says the family appreciated the big welcome.

“I asked them if it’s OK to be in pictures, and he was so happy saying OK. They are happy with the welcome, many people speak Arabic as well to he attached with them and started conversation. It was so nice.”

One of the other Arabic speakers at YXS to greet them was Rose, the mother of the first family of Syrian refugees who arrived in January.

“Me and my family, we are ready to help in any way. We are here so we can help our people. I speak the language… so we can communicate well and let them feel welcome here.”

Rose added that their first month in Prince George has been “wonderful”, saying that “the people here are so so kind. We love them.”

The family will be staying in a home donated by a church member until permanent housing can be found and the four children are placed in school.
