With a 4-6 record, the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team is in a 3-way tie for the final playoff spot in the Canada West Pioneer Division alongside Mount Royal and MacEwan. The UNBC women are in last place at 1-9. The Timberwolves host Thompson Rivers University Friday at 6 and 8pm and Saturday at 5 and 7pm in their first home games of 2015. TRU is 6-4 in the men’s division and leading the women’s standings at 9-1.
–The Prince George Cougars, who have dropped their last three, start a four game home-stand Friday and Saturday against Portland. The 20-23-1 Cougars are 3rd in the BC Division, a point ahead of Vancouver and seven in front of Kamloops. The Giants have two games in hand on both the Cougars and Blazers. All teams in the U.S. Division have more points than the bottom three teams in the B.C. Division.
–The Prince George Spruce Kings are at the 40-game mark with just 18 left in the regular season. The 18-18-0-4 Spruce Kings play their next five on home ice starting Thursday against Salmon Arm. P.G. is 3rd in the BCHL Mainland Division, eight points behind Chilliwack, nine back of Langley and five ahead of Coquitlam. The Spruce Kings are riding a six-game losing streak.
–The major midget leading Cariboo Cougars resume league play Saturday and Sunday at South Island. The Cougars sport a record of 23-4-1.
–Lavanna Laass (-63 kgs over 18) and Grace Northrop (-52 kgs under 18) of the Hart Judo Academy competed at the Elite National Championships in Montreal. Neither were able to pick up a victory. Laass and Northrop are training this week at the National Training Center at the Olympic Stadium with the national team and coaching staff.
