The Portland Winterhawks scored with 3:06 left in the third and then got the only goal in the shootout for a come from behind 4-3 victory over the Prince George Cougars before 3,858 fans. The Cougars struck for three power play goals in the opening period. Josh Connolly, in his CN Centre debut for the Cats, notched a goal and an assist. With the point, PG remains 3rd in the BC Division, two points ahead of Vancouver. The (20-23-1-1) Cougars continue their four game home-stand tonight against the Winterhawks to conclude the doubleheader.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings host the Victoria Grizzlies tonight and the Coquitlam Express Sunday at 3.

–The major midget leading Cariboo Cougars visit the South Island Royals today and Sunday.

–Finals will be played Sunday at the Kin Centre in both the Bantam AAA and Bantam Tier 2 minor hockey tournaments.

–Michael Smith hit a three point shot with just 1.9 seconds left in the game to give the UNBC men Timberwolves a thrilling 83-81 victory over the TRU WolfPack before 514 hometown fans. In the women’s game, first place TRU whipped the last place Lady T-wolves 62-44. The same teams meet again tonight at 5 and 7 at the Northern Sport Centre.

–Top Canadian Megan Heinicke of Prince George posted a personal-best women’s Biathlon World Cup result with an 11th place finish in the 7.5-kilometre sprint event in Ruhpolding, Germany.  “This was one of my strongest skiing performances ever. I simply felt strong and there is nothing more fun than fighting hard when you feel strong,” said Heinicke. The 26-year-old Heinicke will get her first start ever in a mass start race with the top-30 athletes.

–The BC Long Track Speed-Skating Championships go today and Sunday at the PG Outdoor Ice Oval.
