A BC Hydro survey has found when planning a vacation, one-third of British Columbians are open to taking a road trip over a flight to reduce their carbon footprint.
As a worldwide “fly less” movement continues to grow, a survey conducted for BCÂ Hydro found 75 per cent of British Columbians are concerned with the impact air travel can have on the environment. Of those surveyed, one-third said they would take a road trip for their next vacation rather than a vacation that requires a flight to reduce their carbon footprint.
When it comes to the environmental impact of air travel, data shows two passengers on a one-way flight from Prince George to Calgary are responsible for approximately 550 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e). The emissions associated with two passengers on other popular one-way flights from Prince George include:
- Prince George to Vancouver: 220 kg of CO2e
- Prince George to Victoria: 490 kg of CO2e
“Driving one of these routes instead of flying, and driving in an electric vehicle would greatly reduce the impact on the environment,” Bob Gammer, Community Relations Manager for Northern BC, told MyPGNow. “Especially here in BC, your emissions would practically be zero.”
According to BC Hydro, 98 per cent of the electricity they generate is from clean, renewable sources.
