Police catch elusive car thief

Sticking to the saying that the RCMP always get their man, an arrest was made in relation to a recent vehicle theft in Prince George.

On July 2, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Prince George RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle that had just occurred near the intersection of 14th Avenue and Irwin Street. According to the police, a window was left down and the keys were left inside the vehicle.

The following day, police received information that the stolen vehicle was parked on the 500 block of Central Street West in Prince George. The Detachment’s Street Crew Unit was called to assist, however, the vehicle departed the area before an arrest could be made or the vehicle recovered.

On July 4, at approximately 11:15 a.m., a member of the Detachment’s Street Crew Unit located the vehicle being driven in an alleyway near the 4300 block of 1st Avenue in the City. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver made attempts to exit the alley, but was quickly surrounded by police.  The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended a short distance away.  An adult male passenger in the vehicle was also taken into custody.

The BC Prosecution Service has approved the following Criminal Code charges against a 41-year-old male of Prince George:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Fail to stop for police
  • Resist arrest
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

The man was held overnight and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.  The passenger was released without charge.
