HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: THURSDAY, JULY 11TH

NHL:

The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward Micheal Ferland to a four-year, $14 million deal.

The 27-year-old Ferland notched 40 points (including 17 goals) with the Carolina Hurricanes this past season.

PG COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars 8th annual Alumni Hospital Charity Golf Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the PG Golf and Curling Club.

Over the past seven years, the Cougars and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation have partnered to raise close to $500,000 towards healthcare in Northern BC.

For the past three years, fundraising for the sold-out tournament has focused on cardiac care.


CFL: 

Week five of the CFL season begins tonight with the 2-1 Edmonton Eskimos at the 1-3 B.C. Lions (7:00).

The Lions have just four days off since their last game (18-17 win Saturday in Toronto) while the Eskimos will take to the field in Vancouver after having a two-week break.

TENNIS:

Serena Williams advanced to her 11th Wimbledon final after crushing Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2.

The 37-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will be looking for her 8th title at the All England Club when she plays #7 Simona Halep of Romania in Saturday’s final.

The men’s semis at Wimbledon Friday feature 37-year-old Roger Federer against long-time rival Rafael Nadal and No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 26 Roberto Bautista Agut.

PG LACROSSE:

The Westwood Pub Devils play the RPR Mechanical/JR Construction Bandits tonight at 8:00 at Kin 1 in Prince George Senior Lacrosse.

The best-of-three semifinal series is tied 1-1.

The winner will play Northland Nissan Assault in the best-of-five final (July 16th, 18th, 22nd and if necessary, 24th and 25th).

GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George missed the 36-hole cut by five shots at the BC Women’s Amateur in Nanaimo.

Kozlowski had rounds of 81 and 84 for a 165 total.

Wyatt Brook of Williams Lake is in seventh place heading into today’s third round of the 117th BC Men’s Amateur in Pemberton.

Brook is at 2-under-142 (rounds of 69 and 73) leaving him just three shots from the top.

Chris Seeley of 108 Mile is tied for 24th with a total of 3-over-147 (73,74), eight off the pace.

Jay Scott of 108 Mile and Nolan Nicol of 100 Mile missed the cut.

Adam Veenstra of Smithers made the cut and is tied for 57th after a second round 73 for a 151 score, 12 strokes from the top.

Joel Veenstra of Smithers missed the cut by three shots.

 

NBA:

Kawhi Leonard has chosen a shorter contract with the LA Clippers that lines up with his new teammate Paul George.

This means Leonard and George will be part of the 2021 free-agent class.

The 28-year-old Leonard signed a two-year deal plus a player option for a total of $103.1 million for the three years.

The 34-57 Toronto Blue Jays begin a 10-game road trip Friday in New York against the AL East-leading Yankees.
