GOLF:

JB Holmes shot a 5-under 66 to take the first-round lead by a stroke over Shane Lowry at the 148th (British) Open in Northern Ireland.

Brooks Koepka, who has won four of the last eight majors, is tied for third at 3-under 68, leaving him two shots back.

Top Canadian Corey Conners is seven off the pace at 2-over-73.

Tiger Woods is seventh last after a 7-over 78 while pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy ballooned to an 8-over-79.

CFL:

The (0-4) Toronto Argonauts go looking for their first win of the season when they visit the (2-2) Calgary Stampeders tonight in the opener to week six of the CFL season.

In other action: (2-2) Ottawa visits (4-0) Winnipeg Friday (5:30) and (3-1) Edmonton plays at (2-2) Montreal Saturday (1:00).

The (1-4) B.C. Lions play Saturday (4:00) in Saskatchewan against the (1-3) Roughriders.

The Lions are giving up an average of 30 points a game while scoring just 20.

MLB:

Boston Red Sox  5  Toronto Blue Jays  0  (Today)

Toronto is 2-5 on a 10-game road trip.

The 36-62 Jays play their 99th game of the season Friday in Detroit.

Aaron Sanchez lost his 10th straight game.

He gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings and his ERA rose to 6.26.

PG LACROSSE:

The best-of-five Prince George Senior Lacrosse final resumes tonight at 8:00 at Kin 1.

The Westwood Pub Devils lead Northland Nissan Assault 1-0 after taking the opener 21-6.

Game three will be played on Monday with if needed games July 24th and 25th.

The league has handed out its individual awards.

Top goalie Jon Wittmeier of Mackenzie captured the Helen McIntosh Trophy as MVP.

The Prince George Posse start play today at the Provincial A2 bantam lacrosse championship in Victoria/North Saanich.

The four-day tournament wraps up Sunday.

The PG Posse will also participate in the Provincial midget B lacrosse championship next week in Langley.

PG SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will play a couple of pre-season games next month against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams will meet Tuesday, August 27th in Prince George and Friday, August 30th in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings open their regular season on September 6th with a home game against the Surrey Eagles.

 

PG COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars have hired Jason Smith as an Associate Coach.

The 45-year-old Smith was the Kelowna Rockets head coach for two-plus seasons, guiding them to back to back 40 plus win seasons beginning in 2016-17.

He was let go last season after the Rockets 4-10 start.

Smith played more than 1,000 games in the NHL over 15 seasons.

After his playing days, he joined the Ottawa Senators coaching staff.

Smith played under Lamb 18 years ago when Lamb was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers.
