Apples, bodies, needed to feed bears in Smithers

Now that we have your attention, the Northern Lights Wildlife Society needs a little help!

For the fifth year, Prince George’s Crystal Beddome is collecting apples to send to the animal sanctuary, and also asking for able bodies to help pick fruit for those who might not be able to.

“There’s always a lot of apple trees but not a lot of people who want to pick the apple trees, so any help is definitely appreciated,” said Beddome.

The Society is caring for 18 black bears and two grizzly cubs, up almost double from last year. Angelika Langen, the wildlife society’s co-founder, said they’ve been spending upwards of $150 a day to feed the animals.

“The last few weeks have been pretty harsh on our finances because we’ve been buying three boxes of apples at 40 pounds each, 25 pound bags of carrots and a box of cantaloupes every day. It’s really cutting into our finances so we would really appreciate people sending us extra stuff,” Langen told MyPGNow.

Bandstra Transportation Systems is also kicking in some help by delivering the produce free of charge to Smithers.

Anyone with extra fruit or who wants to pick fruit can call Beddome at 250-564-5111, or drop off produce at 2050 Robertson Road, Independent Glass Distributors.

“If anyone is dropping off after hours we will have a wood crate set outside by the compound gate if they could please use that. Also if they could have the apples in boxes and not plastic bags because the bags tend to turn the apples quicker and it becomes a mess,” added Beddome.

Langen said the society is extremely grateful for the help every year and wanted to thank those who donate their fruit.
