Mackenzie to rally in wake of mill closures and curtailments

Residents of Mackenzie are planning a rally to protest logs and fibre leaving the community.

The district has been hit hard in the economic downturn of the forestry industry with an indefinite closure of the Canfor mill and a five week curtailment of Conifex that was extended last week.

According to the MackenzieMatters Rally Facebook event page, the rally is to unite the community to fight for the right to mill their own logs.

“We would like to rally against Bill 22, which is currently allowing our own fiber to be shipped out and milled outside of our very capable Mills. Hundreds are without jobs, and these curtailments will affect more than just mill workers.”
