Students within School District 57 are expected back in the classroom over the next few weeks but there’s still some uncertainty when it comes to the teachers.

That’s because the BC Teachers Federation and the BC Public School Employers’ Association are trying to hammer out a new deal.

School Board Chair Tim Bennett told MyPGNow.com he isn’t hitting the panic button just yet.

“We know that there are some bargaining days coming up at the end of the summer and at this time, we are still optimistic school will start in September business as normal.”

He remains hopeful a new deal can still be reached before the month on the calendar flips yet again.

“Coming to an agreement can take some time and again, we just hope the BCTF and the BCPSEA are going to be able to come to an agreement and not have it impact or slow down what is an exciting time come the month of September.”

Bennett hopes both parties can get a deal done so that the new school year can begin as scheduled.

SD 57 is also on the hunt for a new superintendent, Bennett expects that vacancy to be filled at or before the Christmas break.
