This year alone, the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North have raised over $205,000.
That money will all stay local, supporting the BC Cancer Agency of the North.
81 riders from the group recently participated in last weekend’s The Ride to Conquer Cancer, cycling from Cloverdale to Hope and covering roughly 230 kilometres.
Karin Piche, the one who found the riding group back in 2012, said the idea to start the group came after a close friend of hers passed away after being diagnosed with skin cancer just six months prior.
“I really justed wanted to do something to honour my best friend that year, and I found the Ride to Conquer Cancer on Facebook and thought this could be something I could do, I just didn’t want to do it alone so I started recruiting and ended up with 33 riders and raising just over $100,000 for the kick-off year,” Piche told MyPGNow. “After that, it just became much more than that. I just wanted to keep going. I’ve had many close friends and family diagnosed since the founding year. It just didn’t make much sense to stop.”
Piche added the name Wheelin’ Warriors came to her in a dream that fed into her goal of raising $100,000 that first year.
Since 2013, the group has raised nearly $960,000.
“We’re coming up on a million dollars raised,” said Piche. “That I don’t think I would have ever guessed that we would ever do.”
Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall was on hand to acknowledge the group’s accomplishments.
“You’ve got a group of individuals like this who are out training year-round, trying to raise dollars for cancer research, it just brings it home because there are so many people in our community that depend on that research,” Hall told MyPGNow.
“It’s phenomenal what they’ve done and they have a good name… they have a good track record, that’s what it is, no pun intended,” Hall chuckled.
