UNBC Timberwolves:

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team began its Canada West regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at Masich Place Stadium.

Paige Payne scored the only goal.

The UNBC women host the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday at noon.

UBCO lost its opener 5-0 in Calgary against the Dinos.

The 1-2-1 UNBC men’s soccer team will play the 2-2 Vikes in a doubleheader tonight and Saturday night in Victoria.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will begin defence of their BCHL title when they start their season with a home doubleheader tonight and Saturday against the Surrey Eagles at the RMCA.

The Spruce Kings, who will raise their championship banners prior to puck drop this evening, have named 20-year-old forward Nolan Welsh their captain.

Less than 900 seats are remaining for the opener.


PG Cougars:

The Prince George Cougars begin their pre-season schedule with three games in as many days.

They play in Langley tonight against the Kamloops Blazers and on Saturday vs. the Vancouver Giants.

Prince George will travel to Kelowna to face the Rockets Sunday.

The Cats also play exhibition games next week on Thursday the 12th and Saturday the 14th in Dawson Creek against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The PG Cougars have signed 17-year-old defenceman Aiden Reeves to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Reeves, who is from Prince George, played last season with the Okanagan Rockets of the BC Major Midget League.

He was a free agent signing who was added to the Cougars’ 50-man Protected List prior to Training Camp.

 

Tennis:

In a battle of the ages, Bianca Andreescu will play Serena Williams in the women’s final on Saturday afternoon at the US Open.

The 15th seeded Andreescu advanced to her first career Grand Slam final after a 7-6, 7-5 victory over #13 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to become the first Canadian woman to reach the US Open singles final.

Williams, 37, (and nearly twice the age of her opponent) will be looking for her 24th major title to tie the record set by Margaret Court.

Williams crushed #5 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 in the other semi.

Andreescu will move into the top 10 when the new rankings come out Monday.

The men’s US Open semifinals tonight will feature #2 Rafael Nadal against #24 Matteo Berrettini, a 23-year-old from Rome, and #5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia vs. 78th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

 

NFL: (First game of the regular season)

Green Bay Packers  10  Chicago Bears  3

The Packers have already matched their road win total of last season where they went 1-7.

There are 13 NFL games on the first Sunday of the season including the night matchup of Pittsburgh at New England.

CFL:

Week 13 of the CFL season starts tonight (4:30 PT) with the 1-9 BC Lions at the 5-4 Montreal Alouettes.

The Lions, who have lost their last six, are a whopping 10 points out of a playoff spot with just eight games left.

BC QB Mike Reilly has been sacked 43 times, an average of more than four per game.

The three other CFL games this week will all be played on Saturday: (1-9) Toronto at (3-7) Ottawa (10:00 AM PT) followed by (7-3) Saskatchewan at (8-3) Winnipeg (1:00 PM) and (6-4) Calgary at (6-5) Edmonton (4:00).

MLB:

Tampa Bay Rays  6  Toronto Blue Jays  4

The (55-86) Jays have lost four straight and 13 of their last 16.

The (83-59) Rays are holding down the first wild-card spot in the American League.

Basketball:

The Canadian men’s basketball team beat Senegal 82-60 to finish group play with a 1-2 record at the FIBA World Cup in China.

Canada will play Jordan Saturday and Germany Monday in the classification round which determines spots 17-32 in the competition.
