Tourism Prince George gears up for Mountain Biking

Few cities have similar access to the great outdoors that Prince George does.

That’s especially the case for mountain bikers, whose numbers have grown in recent years as the Northern Capital has become a hotspot for riders, not only from BC but from across the globe as well.

“The riding is good here, we have had the pleasure of hosting mountain bikers from as far away as Mexico and Denmark to shred the trails at Pidherny,” said CEO Erica Hummel. “Each year, we partner with Mountain Bike BC and BC Nike Ride North to host international riders, influencers, bloggers, videographers, and photographers to help us produce content that will garner further tourist attraction.”

Extensive work has been done throughout the last five years by volunteers to develop trail networks. Complimentary of that, tourism organizations along the Highway 16 corridor have developed a mountain biking campaign to create a corridor of exceptionally diverse riding dubbed “Ride North”.

“We’re seeing a lot more of the market wanting to leave the lower mainland,” Hummel told MyPGNow. “It’s just that the lower mainland is too condensed and people aren’t enjoying the trails anymore. They’re looking to do something new and different, something a little more rugged, and so they’re looking up north.”

Mountain biking is a niche activity, according to Tourism PG, and draws some hardcore riders from international destinations to experience what Northern BC has to offer. Prince George has also produced some well knows riders, such as Kyle Norbraten.

Norbraten was recently featured in a video for Tourism PG’s new page.
