At least 60 days before edibles become available in cannabis stores

No, it’s not 4-20… but cannabis consumers are certainly celebrating the day (Oct. 17) nonetheless.

One year ago, the Canadian Government officially brought into effect the legalization of cannabis across the country.

However, today marks yet another milestone.

The day brings about the legal sale of cannabis-infused edibles as well.

However, despite the legalization, it may take a bit more time for users to be able to find edible products on licenced store shelves. This is according to Sandy Przysieny, a part-owner of Grasshopper Retail, Prince George’s first licenced cannabis store.

“It’s not even just edibles. It’s edibles, topicals and concentrates,” Przysieny told MyPGNow. “They all technically become legal today but Health Canada still has to do the regulating testing on not only the product but on the packaging as well. This takes anywhere between 60-90 days — I’m not too sure on the exact date before we’re actually able to sell these products. I imagine these products will be on the portal to us just trickling through the coming of months.”

Grasshopper Retail is hoping to be able to have products in time for December, more specifically for Christmas.

Przysieny adds that, since opening in July, there has been great interest in purchasing edibles from their customers. With the interest, confusion came on the actual legalization and what it pertained to at the time.

“Everyday, people are asking about it. Not only if we had it, but they’re also surprised to learn it’s not legal yet. Some of them have been buying from the grey market unknowingly. They thought these brick and mortar stores were actually legally selling them just because they have an operating store.”

As they and other legal cannabis stores await the approval of products by Health Canada, Przysieny said they’re eager to have the products become available.

“A lot of people have been asking every single day and asking when they can get their hands on it, so I think it’ll be a really big boom for business once they become available.”
