A major upset in the BCMML as the Kootenay Ice beat the first place Cariboo Cougars 7-5 (Sunday) to get a split of the doubleheader. It was just the 5th win in 32 games for the (5-23-4) Ice. Cariboo is 27-6-1. The Cougars won the opener 7-1 (Saturday) on Jameson Jones night at Kin 1. The game raised about $1,500 for BC Children’s Hospital. Next up for the Cougars will be road games Saturday and Sunday at Fraser Valley.

–The Prince George Cougars home losing streak reached seven games and their overall losing skid reached a dozen following a pair of losses against the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds won handily 9-2 (Friday) and 3-0 (Saturday). The (20-31-1-1) Cougars have dropped to the basement of the BC Division, a point behind Vancouver and four back of Kamloops in the scramble for the last playoff spot. The Cougars conclude a four game home-stand when they entertain the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday and Saturday.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings returned home with three out of a possible six points on their three game road trip against Mainland Division opponents. All three games were decided by one goal. The Spruce Kings beat Surrey 4-3 (Saturday) after a 4-3 overtime loss in Chilliwack (Friday) and a 3-2 loss in Langley (Thursday). The (23-20-0-5) Spruce Kings host Coquitlam Friday and Saturday. With 10 games left, Prince George remains a solid third in the Mainland Division, six points behind Langley, seven back of Chilliwack and eight ahead of Coquitlam.

–The PG based Northern Cougars concluded their regular season in the BC Female Major Midget League with a win and a pair of ties against the Fraser Valley Phantom. A 3-2 victory (Friday) was followed by 1-1 (Saturday) and 2-2 (Sunday) draws. The first place Northern Cougars set the league record for most goals (125) & most wins (25).

–The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team swept the MacEwan Griffins (81-65 Friday and 78-67 Saturday) to extend its winning streak to four games. The UNBC men are 9-7, tied with Thompson Rivers for second place in the Explorer Division, although TRU holds the tie-breaker. The top three teams make the playoffs. On the women’s side, the Lady Timberwolves are 2-12 after dropping a pair to MacEwan 77-63 (Friday) and 75-62 (Saturday), UNBC will host Fraser Valley Friday and Saturday. The Fraser Valley men are unbeaten and the Fraser Valley women are in third place.

–The Cougar Classic senior boys basketball tournament was won by the Duchess Park Condors who knocked off Smithers in the final 93-73. Host College Heights came third out of eight after a 67-63 triumph over D.P. Todd in the bronze medal game.

–Former Prince George Track club member Alyx Treasure, who is competing for Kansas State, leaped to a first place finish in the women’s high jump at the University of New Mexico Invitational meet. Treasure topped the field of 15 with a leap of 1.83 metres.
