Northern Hardware will close its “mom and pop” store in 2020.

After 100 years of operating in Prince George’s Downtown core, Northern Hardware will be closing its doors early next year.

This comes on the same day Lowe’s announced the closure of 34 locations in Canada, including Prince George.

Northern Hardware President, Kelly Green stated this has been in the works for a while.

“It’s not an overnight decision, it’s been coming for a long time and I think this is a great ending for us. I think it is amazing we’ve been in business for 100 years as we’re just a little mom and pop hardware store.”

She adds there were several factors that played into their decision to close.

“Business, in general, is tough, the online world presence keeps getting stronger and stronger, weather plays into that and even box stores that have come in like Lowe’s a few years ago stole a lot of business from us.”

Even with the closure of Lowe’s at the Pine Centre Mall also coming in February, it still wouldn’t have been enough for Northern Hardware to keep going.

“To keep going, we would have to downsize and move. Monday to Friday downtown the people that work there keep business quite steady but on the weekends it has changed, the downtown has changed a lot.”

Green told MyPGNow.com no closing date has been set but it’s expected they’ll wrap up operations by the end of February.

A customer appreciation day is slated for December 7th.
