Last day on the job for most Endako Mine employees

It was the last day on the job for most of the nearly 300 unionized workers at Fraser Lake’s Endako Mine Thursday.

Thompson Creek Metals announced back in December that the mine would “temporarily suspend” its operations, leaving only a skeleton crew behind.

President Frank Everett of the United Steelworkers Local 1 – 424 says it’s tough to know you’re losing you job, even if you know months or days in advance.

“It’s a significant alteration of your life,” he says. “People will have to start making changes and contemplating where they can find work and see where it’s available for them.”

Everett says a job fair in the area last month was well-attended.
