Provincial government secures affordable rental housing in Prince George

The BC Government and the Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George have joined forces to purchase a six-unit apartment complex.

It is to give the Indigenous population an option when it comes to affordable rental housing in the northern capital.

The property is located at 2541 Oak Street with both the federal and provincial governments chipping in 840-thousand dollars to finance the purchase and renovation of the building.

The complex consists of two one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom apartments.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Selina Robinson spoke on the announcement.

“You can’t have opportunities, you can’t go to school or be healthy unless you have a safe place to live and that’s why it’s so critical.”

“With indigenous communities, it’s that much harder for them to build infrastructure and housing on reserve, we know people have been leaving for generations having a hard time making their way as we’ve got a history of trauma or oppression so we need to make sure there is a real opportunity.”

In addition, the province also announced an agreement with the First Nations Health Authority today (Tuesday).

It will provide temporary housing near medical facilities in Prince George for those travelling from remote communities to appointments.
