Select Committee on a Safe, Clean and Inclusive Downtown completes first meeting

Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall says the first meeting was a productive one for the Select Committee on a Safe, Clean and Inclusive Downtown.

The group formally met for the first time yesterday (Wednesday) where they took in a presentation from City Manager Kathleen Soltis on how they have been dealing with homeless camps the last few years.

Hall told MyPGNow.com safety and security in the downtown core were discussed at length.

“There were conversation and suggestion about expanding police presence downtown and what does that mean for the budget and how would we pay for that, there was a discussion about expanding bylaw services and security for downtown and other areas of our community.”

At the end of it all, Hall couldn’t say enough good things about the group.

“It’s a very, very good group. There’s a good cross-section of our community represented, which is what I wanted to see happen when the council was looking at this committee that was one of the focal points for us.”

“The intent at the first one (meeting) was to get to know each other and there are committee members that don’t know each other so it was a time to introduce yourself and introduce your background and what you bring to the table, your experience within our city.”

The group includes members from Downtown Prince George, Prince George Chamber of Commerce, RCMP, Northern Health, and the Native Friendship Centre.

Lynne Brown, Paul Burry, David McMullen, Shelby Petersen, and Daniel Roy are also members.

The committee will look to address social issues throughout Prince George, with a particular focus on the downtown core.

Final recommendations are set to be presented to City Council by June 30th.
