The Prince George Cougars in partnership with Northern Health and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation announced the winners of the Spirit of Healthy Kids Regional Program today (Wednesday).
W.L. McLeod Elementary School in Vanderhoof has won a $5,000 Spirit of Healthy Kids grant from the Northern Health Authority, for the McLeod Healthy Kids & families school project.
Prince George’s Harwin Elementary has also won a $1,000 Spirit of Healthy Kids grant.
“The Spirit of Healthy Kids partnership program is rooted in our northern kids. This innovative program aims to engage our kids, is delivered in the spirit of the whole school, the whole community, and with the hope for positive impacts far into the future,” said Petrina Bryant, Northern Health Authority, Regional Nursing Lead for Healthy Schools and Youth.
The Program uses Cougars players as role models and teaches students the importance of reading, physical activity, and healthy behavior.
“The Cougars are very proud to be able to work shoulder to shoulder with Northern Health and the Spirit of the North, to help make our communities stronger and healthier,” commented Cougars’ Vice President, Business Andy Beesley.
“I know our players enjoy presenting the program, knowing that they are helping to be positive role models to many thousands of young impressionable kids,” he said.
The schools will use the grant money they received from the Northern Health Authority to complete their school projects this spring.
