Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser sees record turnout

Prince George’s “Coldest Night of the Year” Walk-a-thon saw its best-ever turnout over the weekend, organizers announced.

The fundraiser, held by the Association Advocating for Women (AWAC) is in its 4th year, and aims to raise money to help homeless individuals get back on their feet.

This year’s event saw 183 walkers and 19 teams, with a total of $26,949, compared to last year’s 21 teams, 130 walkers, and $27,500 total, said Event Director Alanna Le Cerf.

“We had definitely way more walkers this year,” she explained.

“Online we only had 106 people sign up, so we actually had 72 walk ins!”

Le Cerf attributed the number spike to better marketing and public outreach.

The money goes towards what AWAC calls a ‘start-up kit’, full of things like shower curtains, toasters, and other things you need but might not think of.

She explained the walk doesn’t just raise money, it helps increase awareness of issues affecting those who are homeless in the city.

Plans for next year are already underway; AWAC plans to do events leading up to the walk to continue to grow it.

They also plan to bring on board those with lived experience, to show the face of the fundraiser.
