Staggered starts, Plexiglass among new measures to further protect postal workers in PG

Postal workers union President Clark Rasmussen is encouraging Prince George residents to take additional measures when it comes to sanitizing.

Rasmussen told MyPGNow.com on top of staying inside, making sure your mailbox is clean and tidy would be a huge help.

“What we’re asking if we can, is to sanitize their mailboxes along with their handrails and door handles and once we are approaching the homes we would people to stay inside so that we can keep our physical distancing.”

He adds Canada Post is implementing staggered starts for its workers to limit the number of people in the building.

Plexiglass has also been installed at its retail outlets, a move other businesses across the city are picking up on.

“People have seen this of course around the city in different places and we want to make sure our front end workers are safe, we do have a lot of workers picking up parcels so we do have the plexiglass up now at a lot of our locations.”

Rasmussen stated the adjusted hours means some carriers are starting earlier but are encountering another problem.

“Of course some of our mail and letter carriers are out a little earlier than usual but what we are hearing is that we’re getting a little more problems with dogs because more people are at home, so we’re asking that any dogs are within the house or restrained behind the fence.”

While the service changes have been tough, Rasmussen believes everyone is on the same page.

“It took a couple of weeks for us to get up to speed especially the larger businesses because it’s such a big task, but as I said, the postal workers union has made health and safety a priority and I think over the last four to five days we are there.”
