Community Arts Council anticipates challenges in post-COVID-19 landscape

Prince George’s Community Arts Council is prepared to kickstart the arts as the provincial discussions about lifting COVID-19 restrictions pick up.

Members of PG’s arts community have adapted to the challenges of COVID-19 so far, according to PG Arts Council’s Executive Director, Sean Farrell.

“What’s been really interesting, especially locally, is how so many local artists and arts organizations and performers quickly customized their programs to the online format, ” he said.

However, some challenges may be on the horizon, as the rules and recommendations around lifting COVID-19 restrictions have yet to be revealed.

“Looking at this coming season, that’s when we’re going to see some challenges… we’re going to have to look at what the marketplace is going to be expecting,” Farrell explained.

Furthermore, the Community Arts Council realizes they may fall victim to COVID-related cancellations.

“The community arts council is already looking at what our year might look like if we can’t hold some of our large signature events.”

Farrell explained that organizations that offer recreational programs, sporting events, arts and culture are going to have to act responsibly as moving forward to keep the community healthy.

However, despite facing potential challenges on the horizon, Farrell has faith the arts will continue to flourish in the area:

“Culture is a group experience quite often, and that’s never going to change.”

“We’re going to survive, and we’re going to adjust, and we’ll continue to do outstanding work, but it’s going to probably look quite different for the foreseeable future,” he added.

More information on the Community Arts Council can be found on their website.
