Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall stated the city is incurring significant costs in relation to the opioid crisis.
According to the latest report from the BC Coroner’s Service, Prince George has had 7 illicit drug deaths so far this year, a significant portion of Northern Health’s 22 total deaths.
Hall told MyPGNow.com this is not just a downtown issue.
“I take a look at downtown and it’s not just downtown, the opioid crisis affects people all over our community and there is a cost to be paid and the cost, unfortunately, is with lives at times but also costs in dealing with the crisis and everybody is in it.”
Hall also touched on the letter of support from Quesnel City Council that was sent to the province.
“It’s important for us to travel that path with Quesnel and other communities, the costs were incurring here is not just here from a dollar perspective but it’s from the services that are being provided as well.”
Last week, Quesnel City Council joined the city in wanting a piece of the pie in any settlement or court victory in connection with the opioid crisis.
Several provinces have joined BC in its lawsuit against drug companies, including the maker of OxyContin, accusing them of making false marketing claims that opioids are less addictive than other pain drugs.
