City of PG asking residents to consider paying taxes remotely

This week City of PG staff will be mailing out property tax notices for 2020.

However, due to provincial health orders, City officials are encouraging the public to consider paying taxes remotely rather than in person.

Various options exist, including online banking, telephone banking, mail to City Hall, and PayTM Canada’s mobile app.

Property taxes are due by July 3rd and will fund a majority of the City’s operations and services including road and sidewalk rehabilitation, snow clearing, police, and fire services.

However, the city also generates income from user fees, the rental of civic facilities, off-street parking, and permits related to new developments and construction.

As a result of provincial health orders related to COVID-19, the City has lost $1.3 million in revenue per month.

Anyone who chooses to pay their taxes in-person at the City’s Service Centre will be expected to follow physical distancing and sanitization protocols.

Furthermore City Council has made significant adjustments to the City budget and 2020 tax levy by reducing the tax levy increase by nearly half, from 3.44% to 1.75%.

Information on how to pay taxes remotely can be found on the City’s website.
