2020 Climate Change Mitigation Plan given to council

(City of PG)

Prince George City Council was presented with the 202o Climate Change Mitigation Plan at tonight’s (Monday) meeting.

The report found that 51 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the city come from vehicles, 38 percent from buildings, nine percent from solid waste, three percent from water and sewer and one percent from streetlights.

While the city itself generates a relatively small portion of the community’s green house gas emissions, it has the ability to influence other sectors.

According to the report, the global temperature average has increased by one degree, meanwhile the average temperature around Prince George has increased by 1.7 degrees since 1942.

Prince George has seen warmer winters, leading to more rain on snow events that flood low level areas, and more trees being infested with the mountain pine beetle.

The region has also seen hot, dry, summers leading to historic wildfire seasons, and long winter cold snaps from a weakened Jetstream.

Some actions that the city can do identified in the report:
* more urban forest
* require bike parking and electric vehicle charging stations in parking lots
* lowering speed limits to encourage other forms of transportation

The report suggests that the city can cut emissions 50 per cent by 2040 following the targets laid out.

The majority of them focus on alternative and electric transport solutions, as well as retrofitting buildings to more efficient systems.

Individual parts of the plan will be debated at future meetings.
