“Gathering of the Rocks” celebrates the City & Host First Nation

A new monument celebrating the Canada Winter Games and its partnership with the Lheidli T’enneh is on display downtown.

Clint George, a councillor with the Penticton Indian Band, is the artist who created the “Gathering of the Rocks” sculpture .

He says it started with discussions between the First Nation and the City of Prince George.

“I had to really think about how I’d be able to do this,” he says. “How would we be able to blend the two together, and understanding the history between Prince George and the Lheidli T’enneh, I had to dig into that.”

The seven-foot sculpture is meant to be a physical representation of Canada’s ability to embrace unity in diversity, combining a maple leaf and prayer drum, with rocks brought in from across the country.

George says the idea is so that people will bring their own rocks from around the country and the world.

It is on display now at Canada Games Plaza.
