Covid-19 Update: 36 cases, no deaths since Friday

Over the last 72 hours there have been 36 new cases of COVID-19 say BC Health Officials.

There were 14 recorded Friday, 16 Sunday, and six today (Monday), none in Northern Health, where the total remains at 65 with one active.

There have been 2,745 COVID-19 test positive cases in BC, of those, there are 182 active cases, 13 people in the hospital, and 4 in ICU.

There have also been no new virus deaths over the last three days, leaving the total at 168.

“We ask British Columbians to not lose sight of the immense effort that we have all put into staying safe and remember that many people have experienced severe illness, and many families have lost loved ones. We must remember there is no treatment and no vaccine for COVID-19, which means the virus will be in our communities for a long time to come,” said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“Our objective is to keep COVID-19 low and slow. To do this, we are opening what is safe to open and keeping closed what is more harmful. We are slowly easing restrictions that are safe to lessen and are keeping measures in place to contain further spread.”

Meanwhile, the Kearl Lake outbreak in Alberta has been declared over and there have been no new community or long term care outbreaks.

There are four health care facilities with active outbreaks remaining.

Dr. Henry says the virus will continue in our communities and it’s easy to lose sight of that based on how well we are doing in the province.

“We have learned where COVID-19 spreads and we don’t have to look far to see that when left unchecked, a small cluster can quickly surge into multiple super-spreading events. This is a seed we do not want to grow,” said Doctor Henry.

“The tools we have are: rapid testing for anyone with symptoms, so we can quickly contain every new case and stop outbreaks; giving everyone the space to stay safe, whether at home, at work or with friends; and always following the rules for safe social interactions.”

She also says rapid testing needs to take place for anyone with COVID symptoms.

In addition, the ban on gatherings of over 50 people is not going anywhere yet, it will be in place for ‘many months to come’ says Dr. Henry.
