Prince George City Council heard a report from staff this evening about the plans for reopening indoor and outdoor Civic Facilities.
The Aquatics Centre will be reopening September 8th, however, the Four Seasons Leisure Pool will remain closed until the province enters Phase Four of the Restart Plan.
Usage for the Aquatics Centre would be limited to four, two hour periods of time with an hour between each to clean the area.
City Staff noted it doesn’t expect swimming lessons to resume until Phase Four.
Meanwhile, Kin Centres Two and Three are slated for August 4th, with Kin One following behind.
The larger arenas like the CN Centre, Rolling Mix Concrete Arena and the Elkcentre do not have a firm date, though the hope is that they open in early September.
Currently, the WHL and BCHL are in talks with the province about their return to play plans.
City staff remarked that it would be likely only ten players on the ice, and no gameplay until Phase Four.
Moving outdoors, a good portion of Prince George’s parks and trails have remained open to the public during the pandemic.
School District 57 playgrounds and fenced dog parks were also reopened June 5th,
However, park and facility rentals will not be issued for the remainder of the year.
As for Masich Place, usage will be limited to the hours of 6 am- 1 pm once construction is complete.
Each building is subject to modified usage, with only a limited number of people able to use the space at once.
Council also tackled the issue of public hearings; members of the public who wish to make presentations can now attend by phone.
Transit will continue to run on a summer schedule, as 40 per cent of ridership comes from post-secondary students in the city and they will not be physically returning to classrooms in the fall.
Mayor Lyn Hall started the meeting by opening the floor to Councilors for a discussion on the recent Black Lives Matter solidarity demonstrations in the city.
Each Councilor shared remarks, some with prepared statements, praising the local organizers for the work they did to make the demonstrations happen.
A third protest is scheduled for this Friday.
