BC gov’t supports hospitality training in PG

The BC Government is investing more into tourism and hospitality in Prince George.

President of the Canadian Canadian Vocational Training Centre, Cal Purcell says students in the “Room Keys” program practice text book theories in hotels, just like the Ramada in downtown PG.

He says a benefit to the program is that it attracts long-term employees over transient workers.

“They actually want to do the job, want to actually work in the industry, it gives a lot longer-term opportunity that they can then promote Prince George on a longer-term.”

Prince George – Valemount MLA Shirley Bond (pictured centre with MLA Mike Morris at right) calls the “Room Keys” project a crucial part of their tourism strategy, which they credit as a “Key sector in the BC Jobs Plan.”

Bond says “The Room Keys project will deliver further training opportunities and provide participants with the skills they need to find employment in the tourism sector.”

Over the the course of the project, the trainees get 18 weeks on-the-job training.

To date, the province has invested $214,000 to the “Room Keys program”, with phase two getting just over $110,000.
