HARTLEY’S SPORT SHORTS: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

NHL:

–Thatcher Demko made 42 saves in his first playoff start to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 2-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. The Canucks were outshot 43-17. The Golden Knights lead the best-of-7 Western Conference semifinal 3-2 with Game six Thursday night at 6:45 (PT) in Edmonton.

–Tonight (at 5:00 PT) in the NHL, the Dallas Stars play the Colorado Avalanche with the Stars in front 3-2.

–Scott Laughton scored in overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. The Islanders still lead the series 3-2 with Game six scheduled for the Toronto bubble on Thursday (4:00 PM PT).

Junior Hockey:

–At age 34, Adam Maglio has become the youngest head coach in the WHL after being promoted from an associate coach with the Spokane Chiefs. Maglio has been with the Chiefs one season after guiding the PG Spruce Kings to back-to-back appearances in the BCHL Fred Page Cup Final in 2018 and 2019.

NBA:

–The defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors are in a hole. The Raptors lost 102-99 to Boston as the Celtics grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference semifinal. Jayson Tatum hooped 34 points while Marcus Smart had 16 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Celtics. Game 3 is set for Thursday (3:30 PM PT). Boston is 6-0 in the playoffs.

–The Denver Nuggets are the 12th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series. The Nuggets edged the Utah Jazz 80-78 in the 7th and deciding game. Denver will go against the LA Clippers in round two beginning Thursday night at 6:00.

–In the NBA tonight, the Houston Rockets play the Oklahoma City Thunder (at 6:00) in Game 7 with the winner to battle the LA Lakers. In the East, the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Miami Heat today (at 3:30 PM) with the Heat ahead 1-0.

MLB:

–The Toronto Blue Jays lost their second straight game by a run as they fell 3-2 to the Miami Marlins. The (18-16) Jays and (16-15) Marlins play again today (3:40 PM PT) in Miami.
