HARTLEY’S SPORT SHORTS: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

In a nutshell: as of 12:05 a.m. Friday by Hartley Miller

NBA:

–The Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics lay it all on the line when they play Game 7 tonight (6:00 PT). The Raptors are 2.5-point underdogs according to Las Vegas odds. The winner advances to the NBA Eastern Conference final against the Miami Heat.

–The LA Clippers and Denver Nuggets are back on the court today (3:30 PT). The Clippers, with a 3-1 lead, need just one more victory to advance to the Western Conference final for the first time in team history.

–The LA Lakers beat the Houston Rockets 110-100 to grab a 3-1 series lead.

NHL:

–Alexander Radulov scored 31 seconds into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. The Stars lead the NHL Western Conference final 2-1 with Game 4 Saturday night.

–The Tampa Bay Lightning are 10-2 in the playoffs. Tampa will play the New York Islanders tonight at 5:00 in the Edmonton bubble with the Lightning ahead 2-0 in the Eastern final.

–Philadelphia Flyers centre Sean Couturier has captured the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward. The voting is done by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

NFL:

–Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns to help the Kansas City Chiefs to a 34-20 victory over the Houston Texans. It was the first game of the NFL season played before a crowd of only  17,000 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MLB:

–The (24-19) Toronto Blue Jays host the (20-24) New York Mets today (3:37 PT) in Buffalo. The Jays just have 17 games remaining.

Tennis:

–Victoria Azarenka upset Serena Williams 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the women’s final on Saturday at the US Open where she will play 2018 champion Naomi Osaka. Azarenka and Osaka are two-time major champions who have both been ranked No. 1 in the past.
