HARTLEY’S SPORT SHORTS: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13

In a nutshell: as of 12:05 a.m. (All times PT) Sunday by Hartley Miller

NHL:

–The Dallas Stars are a win away from a berth in the Stanley Cup final. The Stars beat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 with all of the scoring in the second period. Dallas leads the series 3-1 with Game 5 Monday night at 5:00 (PT).

–The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders continue their NHL Eastern Conference final today at noon. Tampa has a 2-1 lead.

–Lou Lamoriello of the Islanders is the winner of the 2020 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. The voting is done by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

BCHL:

–The Prince George Spruce Kings will open their season in early December. The BCHL has announced there will be a 2020-21 season even if fans are not allowed in the building.

NBA:

–The LA Lakers have advanced to the NBA Western Conference final for the first time in 10 years. The Lakers whipped the Houston Rockets 119-96 to win the series 4-1.

–The LA Clippers and Denver Nuggets are back on the court today (10 AM PT) in Game 6 of their West semifinal. The Clippers are ahead 3-2.

–The NBA Eastern Conference final between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics will start Tuesday.

NFL:

–There are 13 games on the first Sunday of the NFL regular season including Seattle at Atlanta, Tampa Bay at New Orleans and the night game of Dallas at LA Rams.

MLB:

–After missing 27 games with a right knee sprain, Bo Bichette singled and scored to help the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets. The (25-20) Jays, with just 15 games left, host the (21-25) Mets again today (12:05 PT) in Buffalo in the rubber match of their 3-game series.

Tennis:

–Naomi Osaka has captured her 2nd US Open and third major. Osaka came from behind to beat Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s final. The men’s final this afternoon at 1:00 features Alexander Zverev, the No. 5 seed, against No. 2 seed Dominic Thiem. The winner will earn his first Grand Slam trophy.
